ENHANCING TEXT

For this assignment you will be using a variety of tools to create cool text features- Each item needs to be done following the instructions listed and all completed images need to be placed on your worklinks

Six different cool things you can do to type - do all six (or more cause they are fun) and attach to your worklinks

ADD A BEVELED EDGE TO TEXT

  • Open up a new document - 300 x 300 pixels
    • Type your name in a large font so it encompasses the document (choose a font you like)
  • Open your Layers palette - Choose Window>Layers
  • Open your Layer Styles palette - Choose Window> Layer Styles
  • In the Layer Styles Palette - Choose Bevels from the pop-up window
  • Select a Bevel Style and apply it to the type
    • To fine tune the Bevel Style - Double click on the little F in the layers palette
    • Drag the lighting angle to change the angle of the light source
    • Select Global Light to use the new angle as the default for other layer styles such as drop shadows (experiment)
    • To decrease the size of the bevel, drag the Bevel Size slider to the left - increase> drag it to the right
    • Select a Bevel direction
    • Click OK
    • File>Save for web - name- bevel- place in your week 3 folder
    • Attach to worklinks

ADD A DROP SHADOW TO TEXT

  • Open up a new document - 300 x 300 pixels
    • Type your name in a large font so it encompasses the document
    • Open your Layers palette - Choose Window>Layers
    • Open your Layer Styles palette - Choose Window>Show Layer Styles
    • In the Layer Styles Palette - Choose Drop Shadows from the pop-up window
    • Select a Drop Shadow and apply it to the type
      • To fine tune the Bevel Style - Double click on the little F in the layers palette
      • Drag the lighting angle to change the angle of the light source
      • Select Global Light to use the new angle as the default for other layer styles such as bevel (experiment)
      • To decrease the offset of the drop shadow, drag the Shadow Distance slider to the left - increase> drag it to the right
      • Click OK
      • File>Save for web - name- drop shadow- place in your week 3 folder
      • Attach to worklinks

FILL TYPE WITH A GRADIENT

  • Open up a new document - 300 x 300 pixels
    • Type your name in a large font so it encompasses the document
    • Open your Layers palette - Choose Window>Layers
    • Select the Type layer in the layers palette (click on it - makes it blue)
    • Create a new layer - choose layer>new layer
    • Name your layer>name
    • Select the Rectangular Marquee tool
    • Drag the Rectangular Marquee around your entire name (surround it)
    • Select the Gradient tool
      • In the Options Bar - select your desired gradient type (linear, radial, diagonal, angular, reflected) - experiment
      • In the Options Bar - in the gradient fill - choose a color sample that you like (again, experiment)
      • Click in to the rectangular box - position the pointer at one end of the box and drag across to the other (hold down your mouse and then release at the end)
      • To make the gradient visible only in the text - choose layer>group with previous
      • To remove the rectangular selection> choose Select>Deselect
    • File>Save for web - name- gradient - - place in your week 3 folder
    • Attach to worklinks

FILL TYPE WITH AN IMAGE

  • Open up a new document - 300 x 300 pixels
    • Type your name in a large font so it encompasses the document
    • Open your Layers palette - Choose Window>Layers
    • Select the Type layer in the layers palette (click on it - makes it blue)
    • Open up a picture - it can be of anything - you will be using this to fill in the type
      • you may have to resize your image so it will fit into the type
      • image>resize>image size>400 pixels will probably work well
    • Select the Move Tool - you will be using this to drag your image over
    • Drag your image into the image that contains your text
    • In the Layers palette - position the layer that contains the image above the text layer
    • Choose Layer>Group with previous
    • To reposition the image in the text - drag it until you feel it is appropriate
    • Put a bevel or dropshadow on this
    • File-Save for web - name- imagetext - place in your week 3 folder
    • Attach to worklinks

FILL TYPE WITH FIRE

  • Open up a new document - 300 x 300 pixels
    • Type your name in a large font so it encompasses the document
    • Open your Layers palette - Choose Window>Layers
    • Select the Type layer in the layers palette (click on it - makes it blue)
    • Create a new layer - choose layer>new layer
    • Name your layer>light
    • In the New Layer - choose the drop down menu and change it to Hard Light - enter 80 for opacity and click OK
    • Select the Rectangular Marquee tool
    • Drag the Rectangular Marquee around your entire name (surround it)
    • In the foreground/background colors - change the foreground to yellow and the background to red
    • Select the Gradient tool
      • In the Options Bar - select your desired gradient type (linear, radial, diagonal, angular, reflected) - experiment
      • In the Options Bar - in the gradient fill - choose a color sample that you like (again, experiment)
      • Click in to the rectangular box - position the pointer at one end of the box and drag across to the other (hold down your mouse and then release at the end)
      • To make the gradient visible only in the text - choose layer>group with previous
      • To remove the rectangular selection> choose Select>Deselect
    • On the top bar>choose Filter>distort>ripple
      • In the Ripple dialog box - move the slider to the right and choose a size from the pop up menu - when you are happy with the results, click OK
    • On the top bar>choose Filter>blur>motion blur
      • In the motion blur dialog box - drag the angle to 90 degrees and drag the motion slider until you are happy with your results, click OK
    • Select the move tool - drag to adjust the flames in your text
    • File>Save for web - name- firetext - - place in your week 3 folder
    • Attach to worklinks

 

WARP TEXT

  • Open up a new document - 300 x 300 pixels
    • Type your name in a large font so it encompasses the document
    • Open your Layers palette - Choose Window>Layers
    • Select the Type layer in the layers palette (click on it - makes it blue)
    • Choose Layer - Type>Warp Text
    • In the Warp Text dialog box - pick a style from the drop down menu
    • Select either horizontal or vertical
    • To fine tune the effect - drag the bend, horizontal distortion and/or vertical distortion
    • When you are happy with your results - click OK
    • File>Save for web - name- warptext - place in your week 3 folder
