Change Is Hard (Time: 10:16 minutes)

  • Linda Darling-Hammond offers suggestions on strategies for managing change. John Ferrandino and Jill Burnes comment on the critical role of the principal in the redesign process. In the final excerpts, Deborah Meier reflects on the role of leaders and their relationship with district offices in developing and sustaining good small schools.
 

Stakeholder Engagement and Ownership (Time: 12:50 minutes)

  • In this series of clips, Jill Burnes discusses the engagement of stakeholders in the Enumclaw High School redesign process. She describes the engagement of staff members, the creative ways they found time to plan, and the structures they used to facilitate change. In addition, she discusses the structures, challenges, and successes of engaging the community in the redesign process. In the final clip, Deborah Meier reflects on the challenge of fostering teacher ownership in a system that historically has not valued such ownership.
 

Creating a Leadership Design Team (Time: 2:50 minutes)

  • In these segments, Jill Burnes discusses the initial stages of Enumclaw High School’s redesign process. She describes the creation of its leadership design team as well as the process it used to determine its guiding principles for redesign. Your leadership team may find it useful to view these clips as you begin to consider how to best organize and approach the resources in this Study Kit.
